NEWS: Slump and At War With The Sun announce SP/LIT

 


Slump and At War With The Sun have announced the upcoming release of SP/LIT, a DIY split EP with ten minutes of music from each band, due on 8th December 2023.

With all three tracks partly recorded at the Boooom Room, a recording studio in Central Birmingham built by Kabu and Olly - drummer and bassist of Slump - during Covid lockdowns, the split precedes a run of co-headlining shows around the Midlands.

Hailing from bleak parts of Worcestershire, "Funeral Sludge" trio AT WAR WITH THE SUN combine the catchiness of 80s Trad Doom and the sombre atmosphere of 90s Death-Doom into an uncompromising sound. Expect a procession of battering-ram heavy, hook laden palm-muted riffs interspersed with sad instrumental passages and full-on Funeral Doom sections ranging from 40 - 60 BPM. Add in a subtle dose of Neurosis-style psychedelia and the end result is a sound which is fresh while remaining resolutely old school in its approach.

Formed in 2018, SLUMP re-emerged in late 2022 as a live force of nature, stripping down to a power trio. Relentlessly bringing presence, intensity and energy across the Midlands and beyond, Slump's worship of the riff - with shades of Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity and Down - has gained serious momentum.

At War With The Sun's signature "funeral sludge" provides a nice contrast to Slump's energetic stoner metal leanings, showing just how diverse the genres can be.

Slump guitarist and vocalist Matt is also known for being the guitarist in Alunah. His first full-length with the Birmingham quartet, Strange Machine, was released by Heavy Psych Sounds in 2022, with tours with Paradise Lost and The Obsessed in its support.

Dust and Kneel will form part of a longer EP from Slump, due next year.

The Sound of Origin are back with their second full-length in three years, Man in the Arena . After the release of the excellent The All Seeing Eye during lockdown, the band appeared at Bloodstock Festival for the first time in 2021 and recorded a cover of Alice Cooper's Sick Things for Pale Wizard Records. A rebrand followed, introducing a new drummer in Jack Walker, also of Gandalf the Green . On Man in the Arena , he brings a distinctly different flavour compared to the previous drummer, assuredly stamping his mark onto the band. ARTICLE: Why I love Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

On this day 50 years ago, Black Sabbath released Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on Vertigo I didn't grow up in a household of heavy music, so my first memory of hearing metal is being in my friend's kitchen at around seven years old, at the time when The Osbournes was on the telly. I didn't know what Black Sabbath or metal was back then, but I picked up on a couple of earworms that turned out to be Sabbath songs later down the line. Fast forward to the age of 13 and I was chatting to an older mate of mine about music. LIVE REVIEW: Bands, breakdowns & beers on Sunday at Rabidfest 2023

Rabidfest is a yearly event in Oxford that's seen the likes of Discharge , Diamond Head and Blaze Bayley headline through the years. I was there for the first time last year as a performer and was really impressed at how well-run the event was; this year is no different, with friendly security, bar staff, organisers and front of house, as well as a ton of incredible bands. I'm only able to make the Sunday this time unfortunately, but I'm still left with some serious local and national talent to enjoy for a full day.  I get to the Bullingdon to the sweet, dulcet tones of Fetus Destruction blaring out of the speakers.
